Plans are under way for what
looks to be an excellent joint IAOM meeting with the Ohio Valley, Wolverine
and Niagara Districts in Columbus, Ohio, on September 10-12, 2008. The
technical program will be held on Thursday, September 11. There will be a
tour of the Mennel Milling facility in Bucyrus, Ohio, on Friday, September
12.
The Columbus Airport
Marriott, in Columbus, Ohio will be the site of this year’s annual
meeting. The hotel is very close to the Easton Town Center, which offers
shopping, dining, and entertainment. The hotel has scheduled complimentary
shuttle service to this district as well as complimentary hotel shuttle
service from the airport. The IAOM group rate is $149 per night. Hotel
reservations may be made by calling (614) 475-7551 and mentioning group code
MILMILA or by completing the
hotel reservation form online. The deadline to make reservations at
the IAOM group rate is August 15.
For the spouses’ program, we
are planning a bus trip on Thursday to tour the
Longaberger Basket
headquarters and factory in Dresden, Ohio. This will include a homestyle
lunch at the Longaberger homestead. We must have at least 15 registered for
this program by
August 22.
The IMEF golf outing will be
held Wednesday at the Kyber Run Golf Course, with tee-off at
10:30am.

Tour of The Mennel Milling
Co. mill in Bucyrus, OH
For those taking the plant
tour, you must sign up in advance, and indicate whether you need
transportation. If the need requires it, we plan on having a bus leave the
hotel at 7:00 AM, arriving at Bucyrus before 8:30 AM. The bus would then
depart Bucyrus at 10:30 AM, arriving back at the hotel before Noon.
Long-standing IAOM
Niagara District member Bill Mitchell passed away on March 30, 2008.

Bill had been in
milling for 58 years and was 75 years old in December 2000, when he retired. He
continued to check on the mill for the next few years. He began in the milling
industry on September 30, 1942, as an apprentice sweeping floors at the age of
16 for Hunt Flour Milling Corp. in London Ontario..
He was promoted to
shift miller in January 1944.
He started as a
miller with Acton Flour Mills Acton Ontario in December of 1947.
In October 1948, he
started working for Aurora Flour Co. Ltd., in Aurora, Ontario. He started at the
Phenix Mills Ltd. Galt, Ontario, on February 18, 1952. In May 1959, he was
appointed manager of the Galt mill. The Galt mill closed in November 1964. From
1964 to 1983 he worked for the Phenix Mill in Montreal (Eastern Can. Flour
Mill). He was at the Maple Leaf Mills, West Toronto, from 1983 to 1987. From
1988-2001, he worked at the Halton Flour Mill in Acton, Ontario. He had been
married for 63 years to Dorothy. She preceded his death in November 2007. They
had 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
