Numbers Grow for IAOM’s Newest
District
Approximately 180 milling professionals attended the IAOM Southeast
Asia District’s 2nd annual conference & expo at the Grand
Hyatt Hotel in Bali, Indonesia. This represents a 50 percent
increase over the attendance at the inaugural meeting last year in
Thailand.
With changes in Asians’ diets, the annual consumption of wheat flour
is rising in this part of the world.
“Now, more than ever, it’s important to have meetings like these to
bring millers together to discuss technical advancements in the
industry, as well as opportunities for operating more efficiently in
the mill,” stated IAOM President Joe Woodard.
The two-day conference featured educational presentations that
ranged from flour correction through additives to fast grain
analysis at receiving points, and reports on equipment modifications
and upgrades to food safety and pest control practices.
A table top expo was full of the industry’s leading equipment
manufacturers and service suppliers. During the breaks and unopposed
expo, the hall was buzzing with activity as the attendees made
efforts to meet with each exhibitor and learn more about the
products offered.
“We’re encouraged by the increase in numbers at this year’s
conference, Woodard stated. “The potential for a very active and
robust Southeast Asia District is great.”
During the District meeting, an executive committee was formed to
develop the educational program for the 3rd annual
meeting, which is scheduled for the fall of 2012. The venue will be
determined at a later date.

Flour Fortification Initiative Asia Strategy Development Meeting
The Flour Fortification Initiative
(FFI) will coordinate an Asia Strategy Development Meeting following
the IAOM workshop. Representation from major Asian wheat flour mills
is critical to forming a strategy that is feasible and effective.
The IAOM Conference & Expo will be
30 October to 1 November 2011, and the half-day FFI Asia Strategy
Working Meeting will be 2 November 2011.
Some countries have been
fortifying flour for 70 years, but in Southeast Asia, only Indonesia
and the Philippines follow this globally recognized practice. Flour
is most commonly fortified with iron, folic acid, and other B
vitamins such as riboflavin and thiamine. Women and children benefit
the most from these additional nutrients in their staple foods, and
the improved nutritional status contributes to the country’s social
and economic development.
For the past few months, FFI has
been developing a strategy to significantly accelerate progress in
achieving flour fortification in Asia. We will present this
preliminary work on 2 November and seek comments from millers in the
region as they are one of the key stakeholders of flour
fortification. Issues to discuss include implications for flour
sales and trade, costs of fortification, interactions with
governments on flour regulations and standards, equipment
requirements and quality assurance implications.
The Flour Fortification Initiative
is a network of public, private, and civic sector individuals and
organizations working to making flour fortification standard
practice everywhere. Our goal is for 80% of the world's roller
miller flour to be fortified with at least iron or folic acid by
2015. Currently 60
countries
have legislation that requires fortification of at least one type of
wheat flour with at least iron and/or folic acid. Worldwide, 30
percent of the flour from large roller mills is fortified, and the
remaining 70 percent represents a tremendous potential to improve
the lives of millions of people. The need is abundant, the strategy
is effective, the
costs
are low, and the potential
benefit
is staggering. For more information, see
www.FFInetwork.org
The IAOM and FFI meetings will both
be at the Grand Hyatt, Bali, Indonesia. For information on the IAOM
meeting and to register, see
http://www.iaom.info/asia/.
